Classes

2020 Enamel Workshops

Classes are limited to 8 students and are held at Wellers Hill Arts Hub, 140 Weller Rd, Tarragindi, running from 9am to 4 pm each day. A deposit of $100 is required to hold you place in a class.

I recommend that you bring an apron, wear comfortable clothing and shoes as we are on a cement floor and it can get tiring. There is a refrigerator, microwave and electric jug available as well as tea, coffee, milk and mugs, you will need to bring your own lunch. There are also a couple of cafes and local shops nearby if you prefer.

Introduction to Cloisonné

May 23rd – 24th
2 day workshop – $265

In this workshop we will learn the techniques for preparing metal for enamelling, covering preparation of copper, fine and sterling silver. Using kilns for firing and finishing the enamelled pieces. Then you will learn the technique which you will use to create colour samples and 1 finished piece over the 2 days.

You will create a design in cloisonné wire and using a combination of transparent and opaque colours fill the cells to the best effect, shading of colours using different coloured enamel powder and exploring the difference between opaque and transparent colours. Once the pieces are done, we will be using different techniques for finishing the pieces and you will have a choice of fire polish or hand polished to a matte finish.

Workshop fee includes a kit with silver cloisonné wire, 2 copper blanks for samples and 1 fine silver blank for your pendant piece size 30×40 mm oval. Additional blanks and silver cloisonné wire will be available for purchase at the class.

For the class you will need fine brushes size 0-1, we will have on hand a selection of pliers in round and flat, fine point tweezers, fine scissors, and wire nippers for your use. If you have your own tools and want to use them, please do.

Introduction to Plique a Jour

June 13th – 14th
2 day workshop – $265

In this workshop we will learn the techniques for preparing metal for creating cells for enamelling, covering preparation of sterling silver. Using kilns for firing and finishing the enamelled pieces. Then you will learn the technique which you will use to create samples and at least 1 finished piece over the 2 days.

Plique a Jour is the technique known as stained glass as the finished piece is reminiscent of a stained-glass window, with the light coming through the enamel. After the background design is ready, using a combination of cloisonné wire and transparent colours fill the cells to the best effect, shading of colours using different colours of enamel powder. Once the pieces are done, we will be using different techniques for finishing the pieces and you will have a beautiful creation to wear.

Workshop fee includes a kit with silver cloisonné wire, leaded enamels, and a sterling silver blank for your piece. Additional blanks and silver cloisonné wire will be available for purchase at the class.

For the class you will need fine brushes size 0-1, we will have on hand a selection of jewellery saws, pliers in round and flat, fine point tweezers, fine scissors, and wire nippers for your use. If you have your own tools and want to use them, please do.

Working with foils, liquid, and painting enamels

August 1st – 2nd
2 day workshop – $265

In this workshop we will learn the techniques for preparing metal for enamelling covering preparation on flat, concave and convex surface, finishing of work, and using kilns for firing and finishing the enamelled pieces. Then you will learn the techniques which you will use to create 4 finished pieces over the 2 days.

You will learn the application of foil and the difference between foil and leaf, using this as a background you will create a series of 3 pieces using different applications:

  • Stencilling, you will be complete a piece using stencils created by you as well as using a selection of our stencils, shading of colours using different colours of enamel powder and the difference between opaque, translucent and transparent colours will be explored and will have the opportunity to incorporate silver foil into the work.
  • Wet packing, using the colours to create designs and shading all used in creating one of a kind works, 
  • Cloisonné, using fine silver cloisonné wire over the foil background you will learn how to attach the wire to the foil, then colours will be used to create the finished design.

Once the pieces are done, we will be using the different Finish your enamels depending on the effect you wish to achieve.

Workshop fee includes a workshop kit with silver foil and a set of 4 of copper blanks in oval, square, or round. There will be additional blanks and silver foil available for purchase at the class.

Three-dimensional Cloisonné

September 5th – 6th
2 day workshop – $265

In this workshop we will learn the techniques for preparing metal for enamelling, covering preparation of copper, fine and sterling silver. Using kilns for firing and finishing the enamelled pieces. Then you will learn the technique which you will use to create colour samples and 1 finished piece over the 2 days.

You will create a design in cloisonné wire and learn tips and techniques for covering a domed surface. Then using a combination of transparent, translucent, and opaque colours fill the cells to the best effect. Shading of colours using different colours of enamel powder and the difference between the three types of colours will be explored. Once the pieces are done, we will be using different techniques for finishing the pieces and you will have a choice of fire polish or hand polished to a matte finish. 

Workshop fee includes a kit with silver cloisonné wire and a high domed blank for your pendant piece size 30×40 mm oval. Additional blanks and silver cloisonné wire will be available for purchase at the class.
